Catedral Metropolitana de Oaxaca

Tourist Attractions Article

The Catedral Metropolitana de Oaxaca, known as Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, has a rich history dating back to the 16th century. Its construction began in 1536 and was completed in 1733, making it one of the most prominent examples of colonial architecture in Mexico.

The cathedral is built in the Baroque style and features an impressive faƧade made of white quarry stone, as well as a beautiful interior adorned with gilded altarpieces and religious artworks. One of the most notable aspects of the cathedral is its main altar, which is dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption, the patron saint of Oaxaca.

Throughout its history, the cathedral has witnessed many significant events, including Mexico’s independence and various social and political reforms. It has also suffered damage over the years, particularly during earthquakes, but has been restored and remains a symbol of the city and an important place of worship for the people of Oaxaca.

The cathedral is not only a site for prayer but also a tourist attraction, where visitors can appreciate its architecture and the history it holds
